Mastering, a form of audio post-production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master); the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as burning, duplication or replication). The format of preference these days is digital masters, although analog masters, such as audio tapes, are still being used by the manufacturing industry and a small number of engineers who are specialized in analog mastering.
An explanation - typically if you see fancy audio meters in a car stereo or home stereo that represents the audio spectrum of the song playing in your car it would look like the picture below. This is because normally people tend to "bump up" the bass and the treble in their stereo systems to get a sound that is more pleasing to the ear. When they make these adjustments they typically leave it there at those settings for every song they play on their CD. It is just a common habit that they do. Now if you put your track in their CD player looking like the pic below and play it in their system with their EQ settings, your recording would not sound as well because those same frequencies just got amplified further leading to an unbalance and distorted sound. "Flatter" is what allows for the "loudness" to occur which makes your tracks BANG! with maximum volume. The below picture is a bell curve because it looks like a "liberty bell" shape.
If you look at the graph below this represent a song that has been frequency balanced representing a more "flat" curve. When they play this in their stereo they can crank it up louder and it would still sound together and pleasing to the ear without distortion because when they do crank it up in their system the frequencies are not peaking so high and can take the curve that they set in their home or car systems.
